Gmail Intervention; Microsoft’s Mudslinging

Gmail recently created a humorous site, http://www.emailintervention.com/, to encourage people to switch from inferior email clients to Gmail. Not only does it have a humorous video, but it allows users to send pre-formatted letters to friends with tones such as “I’m here to help,” “I’m worried about you,” and even “you’re embarrassing me!” A quite amusing and interesting tactic–not just providing a video people want to share with others, but a system to encourage people to pass it on to their friends and say what they’ve been wanting to say all this time… “it’s time to upgrade.”...

Where did the Google Chrome Cupcake Go?

The Dev Channel of Google Chrome (pre-release versions not seen by most people) recently introduced multiprofile features (the “Chrome Cupcake”). Now, some people on Windows have seen that disappear. Others did not see it in the first place. The multiprofile features are still there and better than ever… they’re just hidden now. (If you want to try cutting-edge features before the general Chrome releases, go to the Chrome Release Channels and click the “Dev Channel” link under your favored operating system. But be warned… they’re Dev because they may have bugs and are not ready for public release.) If you did have Google...

New Multi-Profile Features in Google Chrome

Update 7/27/11: multi-profiles feature has been updated and has temporarily disappeared from the PC. If you’re having problems, read about how to get your Google Cupcake back. Original Post 7/19/11: If you’ve updated to Google Chrome 14, you might be surprised by the picture of a cupcake in the upper-left corner of the screen, right next to the tabs. If you aren’t using the latest version of Google Chrome then, trust me, you really should! The icon next to the tabs represents the control for Google Chrome’s multiple profile features. If you’re a web designer like myself, or just a power user, you’ve doubtless been frustrated by the...

Why Does my Gmail Inbox Look Different?

If you haven’t seen this in Gmail, you soon will. Now in Gmail you can set your inbox to display new, important or unread messages at the top to more easily prioritize the emails you dig through. You could even flip back and forth among them. This is a brand-new feature that just came out the last few days and is being turned on for more and more accounts. It’s a beautiful feature, and just another reason why Gmail is your best choice for email. See more information about the new look for the Gmail inbox from Instant...

Why are There Spaces In Front of my Post Title?

Have you ever noticed your site title looks like this? ” My Post | My Website” instead of “My Post | My Website” Somewhere in the PHP code of your website (which you can find under Appearance > Editor), you will likely find calls to the wp_title() function. A sample call may look like this: That results in showing the blog title with a separator (the ‘|’ character) to the right of the title… with a space before and after. In this case, the code is assuming that your blog name would come after that. The problem is when you make a call like this: That has no separator character (perhaps the site only shows the post title, or a...

A Better Way to Stop IFrames From Covering Site Elements

Posted by on Jul 7, 2011 in Web Design | 4 comments

Not long ago I discussed the solution I had painstakingly found to the problem of drop-down menus hiding behind YouTube videos. Less than two weeks later, esteve posted a link in the comments to a better solution to Fix YouTube iFrame Overlay and Z-Index Issues. Interestingly enough, I notice that the original problem appears in Internet Explorer 9 and Google Chrome 12, but not Firefox 5. I have tested the following solution successfully in all three browsers. Simply take the normal YouTube embed code, for example: <iframe width="280" height="189" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/GDFUdMvacI0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Then add...
