The Problem with GreenGeeks

GreenGeeks: two thumbs downWhen I earlier posted about GreenGeeks vs HostGator, I largely went by information that could be easily found on their websites. Now I’ve actually had some personal experience.

One of the reasons I went with GreenGeeks was in the hope of greater server uptime. I was soon disappointed. In a month’s time there were a handful of outages. Whenever I happened to notice these, I spoke to GreenGeeks technical support and they assured me it was a one-time occurrence, a problem that should never happen again… yet there seemed to be an awful lot of one-time issues.

The real problem came towards the end of the month; I wanted to try them for a month to test out their reliability before deciding whether to cancel or to move my sites over to their hosting. I was quite surprised to one day see an email saying my sites had been suspended for non-payment… without warning, none of my sites could be accessed. Not only could they not be publicly accessed, but I could not even FTP into them or use any other tools to work on them or move them off! There were no “your bill is coming due soon” emails. There were no “your bill is overdue, your websites will be suspended if you do not pay” emails. Without warning they suddenly brought everything to a grinding halt.

I had to pay for a second month just to get it back up long enough to move my sites off. Then I canceled my service… and GreenGeeks refused to refund any portion of the monthly fee, even though I had only used a few days out of the month and was leaving because of problems with their service.

In the web hosting world, there can be quite small differences in price, loading speed and reliability. Service, on the other hand, is what can make or break a web hosting company, and that’s where GreenGeeks falls flat on their face.

I do not recommend GreenGeeks to host any website
